The Banc-des-Américains

A 1 000 km2 marine protected area

Covering 1 000 km2, the Banc-des-Américains Marine Protected Area provides a sanctuary for many of our iconic marine species. CPAWS Quebec was able to celebrate the creation of a marine protected area in this sector in June 2018, after working to protect the American Bank since 2010.

An underwater talus located off Percé and Gaspé, the American Bank is an exceptional habitat for many marine species, including various cetaceans, the harbour seal and the leatherback turtle, as well as several hundred thousand seabirds. The American Bank also has significant potential as a refuge for fish populations, including the southern Gulf cod stock.

Identified in 2011 as a site of interest for marine conservation by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Banc-des-Américains Marine Protected Area aims to promote the productivity and diversity of fish species and aid in the recovery of species at risk. This project was made possible through the collaboration of the governments of Quebec and Canada.
