Our network of protected areas aims to protect Quebec's biological diversity for future generations - from the vast tundra of Nunavik to the rich hardwood forests of southern Quebec. While protected areas are rarer in urban areas, the pressure on these natural spaces is also the greatest in Quebec.
The conservation of natural areas and wetlands is one of the solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss. Natural environments help make our territories more resilient, and also mitigate the upheavals that are accentuated in urban areas, such as surface water runoff, flooding, heat islands, air pollution, noise pollution... They offer our cities' flora and fauna veritable refuges.
The nature deficit is also greater for people living in urban areas. Access to natural spaces can significantly improve quality of life for people living in areas with heavy urban developmental pressure. This is why SNAP Québec is working to create protected areas across several regions of southern Quebec.
