Nature: our best ally

Quebec is home to a wealth of extraordinary natural environments where you can relax, rewind and enjoy a wide range of recreational and subsistence activities. In addition to providing us with beauty, peaceful moments and resources, nature does a huge amount of unseen work that is essential for everyone’s health, namely, capturing and storing carbon from the atmosphere!

The province’s vast forests and wetlands play a vital role in climate regulation by removing millions of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere and storing them for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. These natural environments are also important refuges and habitats for many species. Unfortunately, today they face numerous threats, such as logging, mining and urban sprawl.

To protect Quebec’s natural environments, safeguard their biodiversity and help them curb the climate crisis, SNAP Québec and Nature Québec have launched a unique initiative: Nature alliée. This innovative and unifying project brings together dozens of partners (Indigenous communities, university researchers, municipalities, RCMs and citizens across Quebec) in support of the same goal: to protect carbon-rich ecosystems.

Thanks to alliances developed in the north and south of the province, this collaborative project combines conservation and scientific research to mobilize unprecedented support and help Quebec reach its target of 30% protected areas by 2030.

The natural environments we protect

The Nature alliée project aims to protect more than 2 million hectares of carbon-rich forests and wetlands spread over 30 sites in 15 regions of Quebec.

Science in action

The Nature alliée project brings together four universities, the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and several Indigenous communities to develop a methodology for assessing carbon stocks in Quebec by collecting hundreds of samples across the province.
